Dress history is not the history of dresses, but rather the history of how people dress. Not clearer? It's the study of and answer to the questions "what did people wear in a given time and place?" as well as "why did people wear that?" and "how were those clothes made?". It's a fascinating subject sometimes called "fashion history" or "historical costuming" but both titles are misnomers as fashion focuses on trends exclusively and costuming is an outdated term for clothes.
