Themes in Black History

Black History has been celebrated annually in the United States since 1926. Carter G. Woodson established "Negro History Week" to correspond with the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, the remembrance and celebration was expanded to include the entire month of February. Today, Black History Month is acknowledged by millions as people of all backgrounds discuss the black experience

According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, when Carter G. Woodson established the annual celebration of Black History. he recognized the importance of providing a theme to focus the attention of the public. His aim was not to dictate or limit discussions but to allow for attention to be drawn to certain developments or topics.
