BPD, formerly called Manic Depression, is a mental illness characterized by extreme, unusual and often unpredictable swings in mood, energy, and concentration abilities. The two poles of Bipolar disorder are depression and mania; depression being a state of low mood, low energy, feelings of hopelessness and loss of interest, and even physical reaction such as weight loss of gain and mania being a state of elation, high energy, feelings of extreme confidence to the point of delusion and risky behavior prompted by little foresight. Some people even experience a mixture of symptoms from manic and depressive episodes resulting in a mixed episode.
If you have Bipolar disorder, or think you may have Bipolar disorder, speak with an adult you trust and consider the resources provided and remember that mental illnesses cause your brain to lie to you; you are not crazy, even when you feel out of control, your feelings are valid even when you can’t control them or understand them, the highs and lows both do not last forever and any fear you have that they will is unfounded, you are not a burden or an annoyance, you are not weak because you can’t think your way out of a manic episode. Bipolar disorder, like any mental health issue, is never the fault of the sick person, it is the product of genetics, brain chemistry, and circumstances.
